Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have officially entered the pre-order period, but early demand is not sending the same strong signal across the market. Some configurations are already facing delivery delays, while many others remain available for launch day.
That mixed picture has led to reports describing the opening demand as muted or lukewarm. The reasons appear to include higher prices, upgrades that may not be enough for every existing iPhone owner, and competition from Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
Early iPhone 18 Pro demand looks mixed
Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup opened on September 12, with the phones scheduled to reach customers and stores on September 18. In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. The highest-capacity versions reach $2,399 and $2,499 respectively.
Early delivery estimates are not uniform. Some iPhone 18 Pro Max versions have moved to later delivery dates, while several other configurations remain available for launch-day delivery. That makes it difficult to describe the entire launch as either a major hit or a weak launch based only on pre-order availability.
One market tracker has also reported that average wait times across eight countries increased to about 2.6 weeks three days into pre-orders, compared with 1.6 weeks the previous day. That suggests there is still strong interest in some models and markets.
Higher prices may be holding some buyers back
Price is one of the clearest changes with this year’s Pro models. The starting prices are $100 higher than the previous generation, according to reporting on Apple’s launch. That increase comes at a time when buyers are being asked to spend even more for larger storage options.
For customers who already own a recent Pro iPhone, the higher cost can make an upgrade harder to justify. The iPhone 18 Pro does bring several hardware changes, but not every improvement will matter equally to every user.
The new models include the A20 Pro chip, a new 48MP main camera with variable aperture, improved battery performance, a redesigned Dynamic Island and faster charging. Apple has also added new camera controls and other software features through iOS 27.
The main question for many buyers is simple: are these changes enough to justify paying more for a new phone?
The upgrades are real, but they may not feel essential to everyone
Apple has made several important changes to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The new main camera can change its aperture depending on lighting and the type of photo being taken. This is designed to give users more control over light, background blur and low-light photography.
The A20 Pro chip is another major hardware change. Apple says it delivers faster graphics performance and improved support for on-device AI tasks. The phones also use a new cooling system designed to help maintain performance during demanding workloads.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets a notable battery improvement. Apple says it can provide up to 43 hours of video playback, which is four hours more than the previous Pro Max model. Faster wired charging is another change, with Apple saying the phone can reach about 50% charge in around 15 minutes with a compatible power adapter.
For people using an older iPhone, these changes may be more noticeable. For someone who already has a recent Pro model, however, the upgrade may feel less urgent.
The new iPhone Duo could be taking attention away
Another unusual factor is the launch of Apple’s first foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Duo. Apple announced the device alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, giving high-end buyers another expensive option to consider.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and has a large 7.6-inch inner display along with a 5.4-inch outer screen. Its pre-orders are scheduled to begin October 16, with availability starting October 23.
Some analysts expect the upcoming foldable phone to attract buyers who might otherwise have chosen the iPhone 18 Pro Max. That effect cannot be measured clearly yet because the Duo is not available for pre-order until October.
For now, the presence of a completely new iPhone design gives Apple’s most expensive customers another reason to wait before spending their money.
What is happening with pre-order availability?
The early numbers show a mixed picture rather than a complete lack of demand.
- Several iPhone 18 Pro Max configurations in the United States have already moved to delivery windows of several weeks.
- Some Pro Max colors and storage combinations still show longer waits than others.
- Many iPhone 18 Pro configurations remain available for launch-day delivery.
- Wait times tracked across several countries have increased during the first few days of pre-orders.
This difference matters because pre-order availability depends on both demand and the amount of stock Apple has assigned to each model, color, storage size and country. A model being available does not automatically prove that demand is weak, just as a longer delivery estimate does not by itself reveal total sales.
India gets the iPhone 18 Pro at the first launch
India is part of the first group of countries receiving the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Pre-orders began on September 12 at 5:30 p.m. IST, with sales starting September 18.
In India, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 for the 256GB version. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. Higher storage versions cost considerably more, with the 2TB Pro models reaching ₹3,14,900 for the Pro and ₹3,29,900 for the Pro Max.
| Model | Starting price in India | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | ₹1,64,900 | September 18, 2026 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | ₹1,79,900 | September 18, 2026 |
| iPhone 18 Pro 2TB | ₹3,14,900 | September 18, 2026 |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max 2TB | ₹3,29,900 | September 18, 2026 |
The Indian launch gives Apple another important market to watch as the company tries to understand how buyers respond to the higher prices and new features.
A muted start does not mean the iPhone 18 Pro is failing
It is important not to read too much into the first few days of pre-orders. One analyst has described the early demand as lukewarm, pointing to higher prices, limited upgrades and possible competition from the iPhone Duo. At the same time, another tracker has found that average wait times are increasing, which indicates that customers are still placing enough orders to push some delivery dates further out.
The two views are not necessarily contradictory. Demand can be strong for certain colors, storage sizes or countries while being weaker for other versions. Apple’s inventory levels can also affect delivery dates.
The clearest picture will come later, after the phones have been available for longer and Apple has more sales data. Pre-orders provide an early signal, but they do not tell the full story.
What could happen next
The next few weeks will be important for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple will begin regular sales on September 18, while the iPhone Duo will not enter its pre-order period until October 16. That gives consumers more time to compare Apple’s traditional Pro phone with its new foldable option.
For now, the iPhone 18 Pro launch appears to be more complicated than a simple story of high or low demand. Some versions are already seeing longer delivery times, while others remain easy to order. The higher starting price and the arrival of a new foldable iPhone have also changed the buying decision for Apple’s high-end customers.
The iPhone 18 Pro still brings meaningful changes to the camera, processor, battery and charging system. But with prices higher than last year’s Pro models, buyers have more reason to think carefully before upgrading. The early pre-order picture therefore looks mixed, and the real test will come as the phones reach customers and the wider sales period begins.
