Australia’s winter crop production is on track for a strong national result. The latest forecast puts the harvest at 61 million tonnes. That would still rank as the fourth largest on record, even though it is down 12 per cent from the previous year.
A solid national picture
Growing conditions improved more than expected through winter in many southern regions. South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales enjoyed favourable rainfall and mild temperatures. These areas have lifted the overall national outlook.
Wheat is expected to make up the largest share, followed by barley and canola. While production of each is down on last season, most remain above long-term averages.
The north is lagging
Northern New South Wales and Queensland tell a different story. Dry conditions early in the season left soil moisture low. Many growers reduced the area they planted. Yields are also expected to be below average in these regions.
As a result, winter crop production in Queensland is forecast to fall sharply. New South Wales as a whole is also down, driven largely by the weaker performance in the north.
Why the difference matters
The split between north and south highlights how variable Australian seasons can be. Timely rain in the south boosted crop potential. In the north, limited follow-up rainfall after a dry start has held back growth.
This uneven pattern affects local communities and supply chains more than the national total suggests. Farmers in the stronger southern zones are looking at solid returns. Those further north face tighter margins and lower output.

Spring weather will still influence final yields. Further rain in the coming weeks could support crops in areas that remain moisture-stressed. For now, the national forecast remains positive overall, but the gap between southern success and northern challenges is clear.
